Empuls Review: Pros, Cons, Features and Pricing
I look beyond the rewards catalog to weigh Empuls’ recognition features, trade-offs, and pricing—and whether it fits the way your team works.
We review tools independently, and commissions help fund our testing. See our transparency policy, our methodology, or suggest a tool.
Empuls is an employee recognition platform that combines peer and milestone recognition with rewards, surveys, and benefits. I’d consider it if your HR team wants to manage recognition and employee engagement programs together, including recognition inside Microsoft Teams. Compared with Bonusly’s focus on peer recognition and rewards, Empuls is a better fit when you also need surveys and benefits in the same platform.

Our team has been testing and reviewing software since 2012. As HR experts ourselves, we know how difficult—and important—it is to choose the right software.
For this guide, we evaluated tools using hands-on testing and independent research, scoring tools using our selection criteria. We also draw on insights from industry thought leaders and practicing HR experts.

Empuls Overview
I’d choose Empuls when HR wants recognition, rewards, surveys, and benefits in one system. Peer awards, birthday milestones, pulse surveys, mobile access, and Microsoft Teams delivery cover more ground than recognition-only tools, while HRIS and collaboration integrations add reach. The trade-off is breadth: teams seeking simple peer praise may not need every module, and quote-based, per-employee pricing makes budget comparisons less immediate. Its Teams interface keeps recognition in a familiar workflow, and onboarding and support are included; I’d still test admin setup and support responsiveness before selecting it. Empuls best suits distributed organizations combining engagement programs.
Pros
- Recognition supports peer awards, spot awards, nominations, and milestones.
- Employees can choose from a broad, locally tailored rewards catalog.
- Surveys and social feeds extend recognition beyond points and prizes.
Cons
- Some users report slow loading and intermittent technical issues.
- Redemptions can involve regional delays, errors, or cash-voucher fees.
- Some reviewers say support response and resolution times vary.
How We Test & Score Our Tools
We’ve spent years building, refining, and improving our software testing and scoring system. The rubric is designed to capture the nuances of software selection and what makes a tool effective, focusing on critical aspects of the decision-making process.
Below, you can see exactly how our testing and scoring works across seven criteria. It allows us to provide an unbiased evaluation of the software based on core functionality, standout features, ease of use, onboarding, customer support, integrations, customer reviews, and value for money.
Core Functionality (25% of final score)
The starting point of our evaluation is always the core functionality of the tool. Does it have the basic features and functions that a user would expect to see? Are any of those core features locked to higher-tiered pricing plans? At its core, we expect a tool to stand up against the baseline capabilities of its competitors.
Standout Features (25% of final score)
Next, we evaluate uncommon standout features that go above and beyond the core functionality typically found in tools of its kind. A high score reflects specialized or unique features that make the product faster, more efficient, or offer additional value to the user.
We also evaluate how easy it is to integrate with other tools typically found in the tech stack to expand the functionality and utility of the software. Tools offering plentiful native integrations, 3rd party connections, and API access to build custom integrations score best.
Ease of Use (10% of final score)
We consider how quick and easy it is to execute the tasks defined in the core functionality using the tool. High scoring software is well designed, intuitive to use, offers mobile apps, provides templates, and makes relatively complex tasks seem simple.
Onboarding (10% of final score)
We know how important rapid team adoption is for a new platform, so we evaluate how easy it is to learn and use a tool with minimal training. We evaluate how quickly a team member can get set up and start using the tool with no experience. High scoring solutions indicate little or no support is required.
Customer Support (10% of final score)
We review how quick and easy it is to get unstuck and find help by phone, live chat, or knowledge base. Tools and companies that provide real-time support score best, while chatbots score worst.
Customer Reviews (10% of final score)
Beyond our own testing and evaluation, we consider the net promoter score from current and past customers. We review their likelihood, given the option, to choose the tool again for the core functionality. A high scoring software reflects a high net promoter score from current or past customers.
Value for Money (10% of final score)
Lastly, in consideration of all the other criteria, we review the average price of entry level plans against the core features and consider the value of the other evaluation criteria. Software that delivers more, for less, will score higher.
Core Features
Peer-to-Peer Recognition
Employees can send appreciation to colleagues for specific contributions, making peer recognition available alongside manager-led awards. For example, a teammate can recognize a colleague who helped resolve a customer issue.
Values-Based Awards and Nominations
HR can create awards tied to company values and use nominations to recognize contributions that merit wider consideration. This gives teams a way to connect recognition to behaviors such as collaboration or customer focus.
Spot and Manager Awards
Managers can give spot awards to recognize contributions as they happen, with points available to support monetary recognition. A manager could award points after an employee completes a demanding project.
Milestone Celebrations
Empuls can automate birthday, work-anniversary, and tenure celebrations, so HR can set up recurring recognition moments in advance. Teams can use these celebrations to mark an employee’s service anniversary without relying on manual reminders.
Rewards Catalog
Employees can redeem recognition points for rewards such as gift cards, experiences, merchandise, or donations. A broad, locally tailored catalog gives recipients options that better match their preferences and location.
Social Recognition Feed
Recognition can appear in Empuls’ social feed, where colleagues can see appreciation across the organization. This makes a contribution—such as a successful project handoff—visible beyond the employee’s immediate team.

Ease of Use
Empuls is fairly approachable, though its broader feature set makes it less simple than a recognition-only tool. Employees can send peer awards, celebrate milestones, redeem points, and view recognition in a social feed; Teams and mobile access keep these tasks familiar. HR can also manage surveys and benefits in the same platform, with onboarding support available. User reviews flag slow loading and intermittent technical issues, so I’d test everyday workflows before rollout.

Integrations
Empuls integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, SAP SuccessFactors, BambooHR, Workday, Google Workspace, Zoom, Zoho People, and Okta, among others.
Empuls also offers a headless API for custom integrations and connects with third-party automation platforms such as Zapier.
