Definition

Often used in succession planning, the 9-box tool can also be used for assessing the current landscape of your team’s performance and potential. Bringing these two elements together will give you a better understanding of your team as well as potential gaps and risks.

For example: if everyone is a high performer, what happens if a few people leave the company? There could be a gap in upcoming and emerging talent to fill.

How to Use it

Plot everyone on your team into a box based on assessing their performance and their potential. This is an internal tool, one to be used carefully and confidentially, not shared outside of HR or your management team.
